The Ventura County Health Care Agency Celebrates World Digestive Health Day

VENTURA, CA — Today, the Ventura County Health Care Agency (VCHCA) joins the global community in observing World Digestive Health Day, organized annually by the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) on May 29. This year’s campaign, “Your Digestive Health: Nourish to Flourish,” highlights how smart nutrition, lifestyle habits, and stress management can support a healthy digestive system.

To help people maintain gut health, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends practical steps such as eating fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts; staying physically active; sleeping well; and reducing stress. Limiting processed foods that disrupt gut bacteria is also essential. These small but consistent lifestyle choices are key to long-term digestive wellness.

Digestive diseases affect millions nationwide, with colorectal cancer being a major concern. According to the American Cancer Society, it ranks as the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with an estimated 52,900 fatalities projected for 2025.

Dr. Dhruv Verma, Chief Gastroenterologist at Ventura County Medical Center, points out, “Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers where we have screening tests to catch cancer in its early stages.” He further explains that most people at average risk, without family history or genetic predisposition, are advised to begin screening at age 45. According to Dr. Verma, the two most common screening methods are a colonoscopy every 10 years or an annual stool test.

Other common digestive issues include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, and Lactose Intolerance. According to the NIH, IBS causes recurring abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits without visible damage to the digestive system. Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract that often begins between ages 20 and 29. Lactose Intolerance leads to bloating, diarrhea, and gas after consuming dairy, which can affect calcium and vitamin D intake. These conditions can be managed effectively through awareness, early prevention, lifestyle changes, and appropriate treatment.

On this World Digestive Health Day, the VCHCA honors healthcare professionals dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating digestive diseases, and encourages everyone to take proactive steps like scheduling regular screenings and adopting healthy lifestyle habits to support their digestive health and overall well-being.
