Syphilis
Syphilis is a bacterial infection spread primarily through sexual contact. Syphilis is curable, though if left untreated, the infection can lead to long-term health problems. Infection is especially harmful to pregnant mothers and their unborn babies.
Prevention
If you are sexually active (vaginal, anal, oral), you can do the following things to prevent syphilis:
- Use external or internal latex condoms
- Practice safe sex
Testing
You should get tested regularly for syphilis if you are sexually active. Syphilis is treatable with the right antibiotics from your healthcare provider.
If you tested positive with an over-the-counter test (take-home test), the Communicable Disease program is here to assist. Call us at: 805-981-5201.
