CDPH working with counties to assess exp\u200bosures related to five recent cases in the Sacramento region<\/em><\/p>

What You Need to Know: <\/strong>Six recent cases of measles have been reported in Placer and Sacramento counties. This represents the third outbreak of measles in California in 2026. Public health officials are investigating additional suspect cases across multiple jurisdictions and working to notify people who may have been exposed. With this news and measles spreading in other parts of the United States and the world, CDPH is strongly urging Californians to ensure they are fully vaccinated against measles.<\/p>

SACRAMENTO<\/strong> \u2013 The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is urging Californians to get vaccinated against measles after local health departments\u00a0<\/span>in Placer and Sacramento counties <\/span>have notified the state of multiple recent cases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>To avoid spreading measles\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0your commu<\/span>n<\/span>ity,\u00a0<\/span>CDPH strongly recommends that unvaccinated individuals exposed to measles<\/span>\u00a0stay\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>home<\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0those<\/span>\u00a0who have<\/span>\u00a0symptoms of measles<\/span>\u00a0call their health care provider\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>guidance<\/span>\u00a0on testing and care<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In late February, Sacramento County reported a measles case in a<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>unvaccinated<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>toddler\u00a0<\/span>who had recently traveled to a<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>area in South Carolina<\/span>\u00a0with a<\/span>n ongoing<\/span>\u00a0measles outbreak<\/span>. Placer County <\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>identified<\/span>\u00a0measles cases in\u00a0<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>siblings\u00a0<\/span>from a different household\u00a0<\/span>who had\u00a0<\/span>direct contact with the\u00a0<\/span>toddler<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>These four cases\u00a0<\/span>represent<\/span>\u00a0the third outbreak of measles in California in 2026.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

On March\u00a0<\/span>4<\/span>, a<\/span>\u00a0fifth<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>case was\u00a0<\/span>reported<\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sacramento County\u00a0<\/span>to CDPH\u00a0<\/span>in a\u00a0<\/span>child\u00a0<\/span>from the same community\u00a0<\/span>who attended <\/span>a<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>educational\u00a0<\/span>enrichment\u00a0<\/span>program\u00a0<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>as many as\u00a0<\/span>130<\/span>\u00a0children may<\/span>\u00a0have been exposed<\/span>\u00a0to the<\/span>\u00a0child while they were<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>infectious<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

On March\u00a0<\/span>5,\u00a0<\/span>Placer County reported\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>si<\/span>xth\u00a0<\/span>case in <\/span>an<\/span>other<\/span>\u00a0unvaccinated<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>chil<\/span>d\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0a different household within<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the same community<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

\u201cMeasles, one of the most contagious infections, can lead to severe life-long consequences\u00a0<\/span>including<\/span> permanent brain damage <\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>also be fatal, especially for children,\u201d said\u202f<\/span><\/span>Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer<\/strong><\/span>. \u201cThe measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and provides long-lasting protection against measles.\u00a0<\/span>Vaccinatio<\/span>n protects\u00a0<\/span>both\u00a0<\/span>our own families\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>those who are too young\u00a0<\/span>to be fully vaccinated<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

T<\/span>wo doses of t<\/span>he MMR vaccine\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a097<\/span>\u00a0percent<\/span>\u00a0effective at stopping illness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>current\u00a0<\/span>outbreak in South Carolina, <\/span>measles\u00a0<\/span>cases<\/span>\u00a0spread\u00a0<\/span>quickly\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>unvaccinated communities,\u00a0<\/span>often within\u00a0<\/span>individual\u00a0<\/span>families,\u00a0<\/span>groups of\u00a0<\/span>homeschool<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>children\u00a0<\/span>and religious\u00a0<\/span>communities\u00a0<\/span>with low rates of vaccination.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

CDPH is working with county health officials\u00a0<\/span>in Placer and Sacramento counties, as well as other<\/span>\u00a0countie<\/span>s across the region,\u00a0<\/span>to notify peopl<\/span>e who may have been exposed<\/span>. The leaders of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>educational enrichment program<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>agreed to voluntarily close<\/span>\u00a0the facility<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>temporarily.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
